Reps Diaspora Committee Warns Nigerians Not To School in Cyprus University
The House committee on Diaspora has warned Nigerians not to send their children and wards to Cyprus International University, Cyprus, because it is not a safe place for them.

‎A press release issued by Oladipupo Akinkunmi Joseph‎, senior aide‎ to the chairperson of the committee, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa (APC, Lagos), noted that Nigerians who previously gone there to study returned with sad tales.
‎The statement read in part that “from all indications, studying in Cyprus International University is not safe in particular, and Nicosia North Cyprus in general, is also dangerous for our students.
The House Committee also noted that North Cyprus was not recognised by Nigeria and all other countries in the world, except Turkey”.
It said that the university had started a campaign to lure more Nigerians to their school, even with the inhumane treatment given to two Nigerian students who were killed in the university.
‎ “The Committee warns on the danger of sending Nigerian students to Cyprus International University, Nicosia, North Cyprus, as one Gabriel Soriwe recently died as a student in the university under mysterious circumstances.
“Gabriel Soriwe, 20 years old, was a student of Electrical and Electronics at the Cyprus International Nicosia, North Cyprus. The university alleged that he was knocked down by a female drunk driver on July 17, 2013. The university in connivance with the North Cyprus Police released the driver and shielded her identity from the family.
“Till date, there has not been a word of condolence to the family. His corpse was sent as an unaccompanied cargo to the grieving family, without any of his belongings.
“The Soriwe family has since buried their son, and has not been reached by the authorities of Cyprus International University four months after, and have expressed pain at the callousness of the university authorities.
“The committee also notes that apart from Soriwe , a Bayelsa born musician , Stanley Ateimo , was also murdered on August 12, 2013 because of a disagreement he had with a white student over a girl in Nicosia,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
“The team from Cyprus International University, Nicosia, North Cyprus held a seminar at Rockview Hotel on January 14, 2014 to lure Nigerian students to their university and they are currently heading to Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Uyo. They left out Benin and Bayelsa because the late Soriwe was from Benin and Stanley was from Bayelsa State,” she said.
