Non-violence philosophy will be educated in primary and secondary schools by former militants in Niger Delta, as a part of their efforts to benefit from the Federal Government amnesty programme for militants to the grassroots.
According to the consultant to the programme, FEHN, Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria, which is anchoring the initiative, the message to schools and universities is to educate and encourage desire to stop the violence and embrace unity despites any ethnic lines.
FEHN’s Programmes Officer, Motunrayo Boladale, commented on the initiative saying that it is “a practical approach at the reintegration of the ex-militants as they serve as peace vanguards, teaching the non-violence philosophy to primary and secondary school students in the region.”
Ex-militiants involved in the program represent the youth of violent behavior that can teach an example of how can a person transform its life.
This program, according to programmes officers, is an essential step in educating youth towards non-violence, explaining the meaning of civil behaviour and teaching them responsibilities in society.
“A fundamental strength of this package is its illustrative drive, being that it utilises a platform where the students can see the transformed ex-militants in the wake of their new lifestyles and share in the knowledge that birthed their own journey towards non-violence transformation. This helps to cultivate the young minds to embrace practical solutions to all forms of possible conflicts within the society.”
